Abstract


Objective: The purpose of this study is to measure the oral microorganism and volatile sulfur compound (VSC) in mouth according to tooth brushing after eating lunch and to analyze the correlation between oral microorganism and specific VSC.

Methods: The amount of oral bacteria and the VSC in the mouth of twenty-five volunteers who healthy Koreans were measured by real-time polymerase chain reaction and gas Sensor Gas Chromatograph ODSA-P2 (FIS Inc., Hyogo, Japan), respectively.

Results: Prevotella intermedia showed the highest decreasing rates (89%) of experimental group compared to control group. The decreasing rates of Fusobacterium nucleatum and Streptococcus mutans were 57.2% and 39.5%, respectively. The decreasing rates of VSC was as follows; CH3SH 68.8%, H2S 50.7%, and (CH3)2S 32.4%. It was shown the highest correlation between and P. intermedia and H2S.

Conclusion: Tooth brushing after lunch improved oral environments by decreasing oral microorganism and VCS, the cause of halitosis, thus it is considered that number of tooth brushing is important for oral microorganism decrease.
